3 millimeter section
Weight was a crucial issue in the development of the Aluminum Chair. To attain the desired 14lbs—heavy enough to withstand the abuses of life outdoors but light enough to be easily moved—the geometry of the chair had to be worked with, and thickened only where necessary to meet structural requirements. The Aluminum Chair relies on a 3 millimeter cross section for its lightness. Approximately eighty percent of the chair is cast at this thickness, with sections increasing only where additional structure is needed.
